Support your independent shops on Small Business Saturday!

The annual event highlights the contribution made by independent retailers and SMEs.

In the run-up to Small Business Saturday (today, December 7), Conwy AM Janet Finch-Saunders chaired a cross-party group in the Senedd.

Speaking after the event, she said:

“There could be no better time for us to be focusing on business in Wales than now. Sadly, 58 percent of people said they would opt to do their Christmas shopping online rather than in-store.

“We need to turn the trend, and a brilliant time to start is this weekend as people across our United Kingdom should be making a special effort to support Small Business Saturday.“

Mrs Finch-Saunders said that there are some 2,931 local shops in Wales, 84 percent of which are independently owned, adding that the Welsh Local Shop Report 2020 highlights “… just how important local shops are to our economy”.

She said:

“These stores are essential to our communities as they provide thousands of jobs, and most of the positive work is down to the businesspeople themselves, with nearly three-quarters of independents funding investments from their own reserves

“Clearly, we need to be doing as much as possible to support them, so show your support for Small Business Saturday by tweeting a photo of you at your favourite independent shop or business, using #SmallBizSatUK, and copying in @SmallBizSatUK.”
