Comment on the new pay for teachers
Commenting on the new pay for teachers, Welsh Conservative Shadow Education Minister, Suzy Davies AM, said:
“It is great that that our hard-working and dedicated teachers are being rewarded in this way and that this extra funding is possible on the back of the UK Conservative Government’s contribution.
“However, what most teachers remain worried about is getting a grip on the new curriculum and securing more money directly and transparently for schools. I hope that the Welsh Labour Government will support and implement the committee’s report tomorrow.
“With additional billions of pounds going into schools in England, we will only see the per-pupil funding gap between Wales and England grow further unless Welsh Government spends the extra money they have received on the back of that on schools. Currently, according to the NASUWT – the teachers union – that’s already £645 and there has been a gap for as long as I can remember. For twenty years Welsh Labour have been letting our young people down.
“Next year the Welsh Labour Government and their Lib Dem Education Minister will receive an extra £195 million thanks to the UK Conservatives boosting education spending. I urge the Welsh Labour-led Government to spend this directly on our schools and ensure that teachers and pupils have the resources they need to succeed.”
